An evening at the casino
If you stay at a hotel next to a casino, you can be there in minutes in the evening. To avoid surprises at the door, here are the essentials about German casinos (Spielbanken). Each hotel page and each casino's official website has the details.
ID and checks
- At the entrance you show a valid official photo ID: national ID card or passport.
- Every guest is checked against the nationwide exclusion register OASIS (since 1 July 2021). Anyone listed there is not admitted.
- Not every casino accepts driving licences. Berlin and Bad Homburg do not; Bad Homburg also does not accept digital IDs. In Bavaria an EU driving licence is accepted on your first visit only.
Minimum age
- 18 in most federal states.
- 21 in Bavaria, Baden-Württemberg and Lower Saxony.
- In Bavaria, 18 to 20-year-olds may enter only with a companion aged 21+ and may not play.
Two areas: table games and slot machines
Most casinos have two areas. Table games (Klassisches Spiel) means roulette, blackjack and often poker with croupiers; a dress code usually applies and the tables often open only in the afternoon or evening. The slot area (Automatenspiel) is more casual, opens earlier and sometimes has its own entrance. Some casinos offer slots only.
Dress code
Smart clothing is enough almost everywhere. A jacket for men is required at the tables in Baden-Baden (jackets for hire on site) and in Bavaria at Bad Wiessee, Feuchtwangen, Bad Kissingen and Garmisch-Partenkirchen; in Bad Füssing men need a collar at the tables. Caps, flip-flops and sleeveless shirts are unwelcome in many places.
Entry fee
Entry is free at all Bavarian state casinos. Elsewhere it is usually between 0 and 5 euros, often for the table area only. Current amounts are on the hotel pages with a date; otherwise please check the casino's website.
In the gaming room
- Photography is generally not allowed (in Berlin only in dedicated selfie areas).
- Table games are played with chips, exchanged at the cash desk or at the table.
- Bavarian casinos close on quiet public holidays – nine days in 2026, including Good Friday, All Saints' Day, the Sunday of the Dead and Christmas Eve.
- Baden-Baden offers morning tours of the historic rooms, no ID required.
Hotel and casino are separate
Even when the casino is in the same building, hotel and casino are separate businesses. A hotel room does not replace ID or entry. Book rooms directly with the hotel and ask the casino directly about the casino.
